Castro & Kaine Statement Ahead Of Presidential Election In Venezuela
WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, and U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (VA), chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, released the following statement ahead of the presidential election in Venezuela on July 28:
“On July 28, Venezuelans will go to the polls to elect their president for the next six years. Despite an election process marred by irregularities, harassment of opposition forces, and persecution of activists, this is a critical moment for democracy in Venezuela, and we hope all eligible voters will exercise their right to vote peacefully. We congratulate the opposition for demonstrating unity in the face of extraordinary challenges to free and fair elections. We are also appreciative of the Biden-Harris Administration’s diligent work to support the democratic process in Venezuela. The Maduro regime, electoral authorities, and the military must respect the will of the voters and the electoral process.”
